What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small amount of data with a unique stamp on it. This data is sent from a website to your browser. It is stored on your hard drive so that the website can recognize your computer. All sites send cookies to your browser if your browser preferences allow it. Web sites can only read information from cookies stored by themselves and not any cookies saved by other sites. There are two types of cookies – permanent and temporary (session cookies). Permanent cookies are saved as a file on your computer for a longer period. Session cookies are temporarily placed on your computer when you visit a website but get erased when you close down the page.

Cookies can not damage your files or increase the risk of viruses on your computer.

You can prevent your browser from storing cookies by taking one of these steps:

To change cookie settings in Internet Explorer 11: Click on the gear (or the Tools menu). Select Internet Options. Select the Privacy tab. Change the settings to how you want the browser to handle cookies and click OK.

To change cookie settings in Chrome: Click on the menu icon in the upper right corner. Select Settings. Click Show advanced settings. Click the Content Settings/Privacy. Change the settings to how you want the browser to handle cookies and click Done.

For other versions and browsers, search for the information on the relevant software vendor’s website. You can also use the Google Analytics opt-out Browser plug-in to prevent sites from placing cookies in your browser.
