Guided historic village tour

During the tour, you will hear about the history of Kukkola village and many stories about the life in the area in the old times. Torne River has played a big role in everyday life of the villagers; it has been a mean of transport and it has brought food to the table. In the Timber Smoke Hut, you will hear about the fishing traditions and see how whitefish grilling has been done for centuries. The sawmill and the mill also tell their part of the history. Guided tour ends with a visit to the fishing museum.

The fishing at Kukkola Rapids has been of great importance for the local citizens for many centuries.

Right up to the present day whitefish are caught during the summer with bag nets from boats or small jetties.

Until the end of the 1950s salmon was the most important fish, but since the quantity of salmon in Torneå River has fallen drastically, only whitefish are now to be caught with bag nets.

Close to the rapids, several fishing-sheds were built in which the fishermen kept their tackle.

At present, there remaine six wooden sheds of varying age. In addition, an ice-shed, an office and a shed for grilling were built. There are also two flour mills in the area, one upper and one lower. The one situated lower down was built around 1840 and the other in the 1850s.

A sawmill, a stamp hammer for making a coarse wollen cloth called wadmol, and a storehouse for timber also belonged to the mills.
