A celebration of traditional culture and history

Experience the whitefish festival at Kukkolaforsen

The whitefish festival at Kukkolaforsen is an annual event that celebrates the traditional catch and culture of whitefish fishing in the area. During the festival, locals and visitors gather to celebrate and participate in various activities related to whitefish fishing along the Torne River.

During the festival you can experience and learn about traditional whitefish fishing and culture. The whitefish fishing at Kukkolaforsen is not just any fishing. It is a method using a long-handled rake that dates back to the 16th century. The method is also geographically unique. It can only be found in eastern Norrbotten and on the Amazon River in Brazil.

In addition to fishing, the Whitefish Festival offers a variety of cultural performances, music, dance and local delicacies. It is a fantastic opportunity to experience the unique culture, food and community that characterises the area around Kukkolaforsen and its connection to whitefish fishing on the river. The festival is a recurring highlight that celebrates not only fishing, but also the community and heritage of this beautiful Torne valley landscape.

A tribute to the arrival of the whitefish

On the weekend after St. James’ Day, the whitefish traditionally begin their migration up the Torne River to their spawning grounds. The whitefish festival at Kukkolaforsen is a festival with traditions from the Middle Ages. Whitefish are necked the old-fashioned way over an open fire, and the whole area smells of freshly necked and smoked whitefish. The fish is raked from the rapids in the medieval way.
