Whitefish fishing in Kukkolaforsen is not just any fishing. It uses a long-handled net method that dates back to the 16th century. The method is also unique geographically. But this isn’t just a story of the past; it’s a journey into the future. As we stand on the cusp of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the world is poised to recognize the significance of Torne Valley’s dipnet fishing culture. It’s a moment of pride for every resident, a validation of the richness and depth of our heritage. Whether you’re casting your net for the first time or tracing the footsteps of generations past, there’s a place for you here amidst the gentle embrace of the Torne River.

Curiosities:
Until the end of the 16th century, salmon was the most important fish to catch, but nowadays, since the availability of salmon has decreased, it is mainly whitefish that is caught. There are also some fishing sheds that are built next to the rapids, in which the fishermen store their equipment. Today, six of these sheds remain, all of varying ages. In addition, offices, an ice cellar, and a shed for storing whitefish, etc. There are two mills in the area, the lower one built around 1840 and the upper one from the 1850s.
